Martlets Suffer First Two Losses of the Year

For the second time this week, the Martlets played two matches in a day, as they and the Tigers of Sacred Heart both traveled to Deerfield. The girls played hard, but got no traction against a very strong Deerfield squad, losing all of their matches at 3-0. There were a couple of bright spots, however. At #3, Marti Jaramillo ‘27 defended valiantly and kept the first two games close before running out of gas (8, 7, 4). At #8, Meiyin Ren ‘25 came even closer to taking a game on the strength of her best squash of the season, but she ultimately couldn’t muster enough winners. Against Sacred Heart, different players found a modicum of success. Co-captain Emily Fonner ‘26 (#4) and Natasha Johnson ‘27 (#6) each managed to take a game to 11-8, and co-captain Elle Wilson ‘26 (#2) figured a few things out and executed well enough to take her final game to 11-7. The highlight of the day was produced by #1 Sophia Lazor ‘27. She appeared to be headed to a decisive defeat like the rest of the team after dropping the first two games at 4 and 5, but she gritted out an 11-9 win in the third game to open up the door for a comeback. In the last two games, she executed brilliantly, flummoxing her opponent with a mix of tenacious defense, patience, and opportunistic shotmaking, finishing off the match 11-4 and 11-7. The Martlets will face another tough opponent on Wednesday when they visit the Wild Boars of Choate.
